PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION AND ANALYSIS

Currently more than one billion people are estimated to be currently living in slums. According to the United Nations, this figure is expected to surpass the two billion mark by 2030. Today, World has recognized India as economic super power and urban India is shining. At the same time teeming millions living in the slum area are struggling for two ends to meet. They have been deprived from eating the fruits of this progress. There is a difference between urban India and poor India.

slum children of dehradun Same trend is visible in Dehradun, capital of Uttarakhand state with 26% of population of Dehradun residing in slum areas. Moreover, these slums are located on the banks of Rispana and Bindal rivers, which puts the lives of slum dwellers at extreme risk. Profound poverty, competition for scarce resources, disease, conflict, addictions and lack of educational opportunities put these children at extreme risk for illiteracy, illness, hopelessness, abuse and the meager resources accessible is the common definition of the urban poor child living in the Dehradun slums.

Considering that majority of slum population are children, the future of the slums rests in the hands of the young generations. What do these children need to reverse the trend and improve the daily lives of slum dwellers? The majority of children in the slums drop out of school at a very early age without any qualifications. They know nothing but hardship and believe they can do nothing to change their circumstances. This attitude leads some of them to embrace a life of drugs and violence. Many would like to leave to avoid that fate, but where can they go, and will they be able to start a new life?

talented students of slumAlthough the government has announced free education for all children at primary school level but why are children not coming to school? Many surveys have been conducted to know the causes. Some of the reasons are poverty, ignorance of the parents, not understand the importance of education etc. but one of the reasons why students are not coming to school is, there is no joy of learning. Education is not interesting and useful. Few opportunities exist for these children that allow them to learn and grow to their potential.

This lack of opportunity results in a  perpetuation of the poverty cycle, allowing them to neither contribute to their full capacity to the community nor be able to take advantage of all that their society and the world has to offer. If these concerns are not quickly addressed the slum will experience more drug related deaths, School dropout, increased crime rates and prostitution.

PROGRAM JUSTIFICATION

Our belief is that all children deserve to be independent and respected members of their communities; that overall child education is the path to a better world for everyone; and that each child, regardless of his or her socioeconomic background, has the power to shape the future.

‘Any Body Can’ Center of talent project targets children in the slums of Deep Nagar of ages 5 years to 17 years, to nurture and develop their talent so that they can use them to earn a living. The age bracket of children we are targeting stand at high risk due to peer pressure from fellow slum children, in schools and other environmental factors. As mentioned earlier, there is a difference between urban India and poor India. To bridge the gap between urban India and poor Bharat, we have a unique idea: introduce “Any Body Can” school of talent project to supplement the in-adequate opportunities offered to pupils in the slum areas of Dehradun. Dance, music, acrobatics, martial arts, yoga, and handicrafts making are just a few of the myriad activities that would be offered by the center. Events would be organized on a regular basis to present the work of the young people and showcase their creations.

PROGRAMME STRATEGY

Through this programme the foundation targets to establish Any Body Can talent development center (school for slum children) that will nature talents, provide basic amenities and psycho social support to 30 vulnerable children living in the slums of lower Deep Nagar, Rispana River bank.

The programme aims at sensitizing stakeholders on issues of psychosocial support to enable them support and advocate for psychosocial support interventions for vulnerable children. The sensitization will aim at changing the attitude of the community towards vulnerable slum children. The children will be familiarized with computer basics and information technology right from the start. The subjects taught would be elementary English, Hindi and Mathematics. There are also Art, Music and health & wellness classes.

एनी बडी कैन इनिशिएटिवThe center would be started with 30 children. There would be one Principal who will have overall responsibility of day-to-day running of the school and one teacher. This will expand into, two teachers and some other minimal staff for the smooth running of the center and cope with the scaling up of the institution. U Turn Foundation would do regular monitoring, with regard to financial management, documentation and reporting.

With the help of good Samaritans and other UTF volunteers, these children would find a way to do something that they like while contributing to the development of their community. Isn’t empowering children to take back control of their lives the most effective way to bring about fundamental change?

SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability of the action programme outcomes is a critical target of this initiative. The programme is being implemented as a component of the Any Body Can school of talents Programme through our community outreach program. Other components within this programme include the Anti drugs projects for kids, Child Labour Project, Early childhood and development project and social mobilization project.

नशा मुक्ति शिविरTo achieve sustainability, community participation in the programme process will be critically emphasized. Communities in the project area have and will continue to participate in the design of the project as well as the analysis of the problem during the social investigation. Community involvement has positive implications for sustainability of the intervention. It will ensure ownership of the programme by communities, employ local knowledge and resources, and involve community members in further analysis of the problem and identification of appropriate actions in the local context. With awareness rising, attitudes are changed hence communities will have a common goal to which they will be committed. The involvement of other institutional actors such as schools, local education bodies and government bodies will enhance the process of mobilization, and implementation, monitoring and evaluation of activities at this center.
The other aspect of sustainability is to build a strong social support network able to care for the slum vulnerable children, nurture their talent and build their capacity to boost sustainability through continued monitoring.
The center will be able to offer modernized conference facilities to members of the community who will be willing to offer trainings and workshops as a step towards project self sustainability.
